The brown marmorated stink bug is an insect that is native to China, Japan, and Taiwan. In or around September of 1998, this species was accidentally introduced into the United States and has since become a season-long pest, causing significant damage to a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and other types of host plants. This isn’t the first time a stowaway species was introduced to a new continent and certainly won’t be the last; but many countries try to take precautions on incoming shipments to prevent a devastating contamination.
These precautions often involve imposing regulations on imported cargo, making it the responsibility of the exporter to ensure that their shipment is sterile. One such regulation was imposed by Australia on shipments leaving the U.S. East Coast, due to – go figure – an abundance of brown marmorated stink bugs on previous U.S. exports.
